Borage belongs to the Boragaceae family and is native to the Mediterranean, North Africa and the Middle East. It has blue-purple star-shaped petals, also known as star-flower. It is both a medicinal plant and used for cooking purposes. Borage Oil is a vegetable oil extracted from the seeds of the plant, also known as star flower oil. Borage oil has a high content of gamma-linolenic acid and can be used as a substitute for evening primrose. It has various pharmacological and health-care functions such as preventing and treating cardiovascular disease, diabetes, cancer, anti-aging, enhancing immunity, antibacterial and anti-inflammatory, etc. It is mainly used as raw materials or pharmaceutical intermediates, and can also be used as food, medicine and honey source.
Borage seed oil mainly contains palmitic acid (C16:0) 10.0%, stearic acid (C18:0) 5.1%, oleic acid (C18:1) 20.3%, linoleic acid (C18:2 ) 37.5%, γ-linolenic acid (C18:3) 19.4% and arachidic acid (C20:0) 4.1% and other fatty acids, among which unsaturated fatty acids account for the majority, with a content of more than 75%. The content of γ-linolenic acid is 19.4% (some reports are as high as 24%), which is significantly higher than the other two plants that are sources of γ-linolenic acid: Evening primrose (Oenotheraspp.) (oil content is about 20%, GLA accounts for 10% of the oil content) 8% to 10%) and black currant (Ribesni-grum) (seeds contain 16% oil, GLA accounts for 13.22% of the oil).
